Drawing on the concept of ‘Where’s Wally’, Thabo is placed inside each of our 10 pictures.
While they might look like just pictures, each scene is intricately layered with hundreds of research-based cognitive activities. The picture scenes deliberately reflect children’s daily experiences, like getting dressed, or going shopping.
Finding Thabo is an ed-tech product, so there is an interplay of analogue and digital. Children are prompted to look for, and engage with, specific objects in a picture while the parents/teachers/caregivers get (daily) prompts via a digital channel (Whatsapp/Facebook Messenger), where they can track the child’s progress digitally. These prompts are currently available in English, Isizulu, Afrikaans and isiXhosa.
Each activity stimulates critical neural pathways in a child’s development, and follows a scaffolding process, so it can be upgraded or downgraded depending on a child’s level.
Developed by a team of experts, including a psychologist, occupational therapist, and speech and language therapist, the content in our pictures covers all early learning development areas (ELDAs) according to the National Curriculum Framework (NCF). It is also an effective early indicator tool for any developmental red flags.
